Flexual reading
May i quickly offer a recommendation for an author who's sci-fi stories address issues of gender, sexuality, race and so on? Her name is Ursula le Guin, she recently turned 80 and she is amazing. In particular, i'm going to recommend The Left Hand of Darkness. It's a fantastic story about a race of people who are neither male nor female for most of the time, but can take on either gender. Inheritance passes to the children you gave birth to rather than those you sired and so forth. It was written in the 70's (i think) and caused quite a stir. Four Ways to Forgiveness is one of her more recent stories but the themes are as strong as ever.

I tried reading Earthsea as a kid and didn't get into it at all, but I shall give her another go now that I am older. :) Thank you!

Her sci-fi is much better than her fantasy, imo.

Ooooooo, thank you for this! Ever since I discovered the existence of a Gay Science Fiction award or something a while back, I've really wanted to find some good sci-fi dealing with sexuality and/or gender, and haven't really found much that seemed worth buying or finding at a library (admittedly, there was a lot of judging books by their covers, but I find it difficult to take a book with a naked dude with lots of colors behind him and a bright light shining from his crotch seriously). I'm making a note of this in my sidebar notepad and as soon as I get a chance to read for fun again I'll go running for her stuff.

The book Woman on the Edge of Time deals with similar issues as well. It's a really good book. Gender, sexuality and gender specific pronouns are anything but constrained in that book.
